Rocket Man

I’ve been so deep into Eve Online that I can’t even get myself to do much else. This game is crazy addicting, I’m even playing as I write this.

I’ve got 4 characters running now, each specializing in a slightly different field, and I’ve been a director in a corp for 6 months now. I really enjoy playing alongside other people from around the world every day.

So yeah, I’m still around, but I’m usually roaming the internet spaceways.

 I Still Live

I’ve kinda sloughed off all the internet stuff I had done for a while now, including posting here, but I assure you I’m still out there.  Back in November I tried out EVE Online and I got hooked and have been spending tons of time playing that game now.  I think I’m gonna start another 100 days project soon, so we’ll see what happens there.

Added a bunch of snow pictures from after sunrise.  Up to a foot or more in spots now. (more…)

 Late Night Snow Walk

Filed under: Outside Life — Blazer @ Dec 18th, 2008

The sky finally opened up and really started dumping snow tonight, so right after I got presents wrapped I grabbed my digital camera and my Flip camera and took a walk up and down the street grabbing some more photos.  The video from the Flip will be added later once I get it uploaded. (more…)

 More Cool Work Ahead

I’m getting closer to retooling my media server each day.  I’m currently testing out a variety of software I want to implement as I upgrade service across the board.

I’ve already stated (I think) that I’ve moving the server to Vista.  I’ve decided this for multiple reasons.  One, it’ll fix a file copy problem I’m having with my x64 machine (it’s refusing to copy large files to an XP based machine), and I can use the Xbox 360’s Media Center Extender functions.  With that I’m looking to start ripping all my DVD’s to h.264 files for incredible ease of access while maintaining quality.  My first rip came to 4.3gb (yikes!) so I’m gonna keep playing with that and try to get the file size down.

Also this week I’ve been playing around with the Windows Live suite of apps.  Not all of them, but I’ve been using Live Mail to keep tabs on my hotmail account, Live Writer to write this post, and I installed Photo Gallery but haven’t played with it too much yet.  Thus far I’ve been impressed and I’m gonna keep using them for the time being.  I also grabbed Windows Live Sync today and I’m going to run some sync tests.  I decided that all my computers have more than enough space nowadays to make syncing the music and photos a trivial thing and so I’m going to use Live Sync to make that happen.

If this post appears on the site, then Live Writer scores a point in the "keep me installed" category.

 Everything I’ve Been Doing

It’s too big for one twitter post, so here’s all I’ve been up to in the last 2 months that’s kept me from spending any real time posting here.  It’s a little to much to put all on the front page, so I’ll start with new tech after the jump.

 Continue

So I’m now on day 2 of Vista on the game PC and I’ve been making some headway.  First of all I cut down the unnecessary services that were running and I added a USB drive to use the ReadyBoost feature.  As of right now, with FireFox 3 running, I’m only using 840mb of RAM.  That’s an amount I can live with, though with not running an antivirus I wonder if that was why I couldn’t use this computer under Vista before.

I also have looked at swapping out the motherboard and CPU for a quad-core variety.  It’s gotten cheap enough ($330 for 2.6ghz +mobo +4GB RAM) and the performance increase definitely seems worth it.  I’m still on the fence about that kind of investment right now, so that’s probably not going to happen anytime soon.

I did take a look at Orb for streaming to the Xbox 360.  My primary concern there is the resources it would consume.  From what I read about it, it streams over the internet to all your devices.  What I don’t know is if it’ll stream directly and avoid the internet if it detects a device on the LAN.  I’d hate to chew up my net connection just to watch a video on a box across the room.

 Back To Vista

I’m once again back to testing out Vista on my main compy.  I’ve decided that I want it on all my PCs before too long.  The main reason for this is simply there are too many features in Vista that are lacking in XP.  For example, Windows Media Center would be great to have so I can stream to my Xbox 360.  I also love the accessibility of the sidebar and the start menu (in xp on the game PC i’d always look in disgust at the old style start menu when I had to open it).  I’m currently running the 64-bit ultimate edition.  I’m really going to dig around and see if I can make this really viable.  Currently with no apps but the standard background stuff going I’m using anywhere between 850mb and 950mb of RAM.  That’s still higher than what the lappy uses, and it has integrated video.  I intend to delve into what causes this when I can, but so far I’ve noticed no difference in performance when gaming in TF2 (thanks to maturing ATI drivers).  Any suggestions on how I can boost performance would be great.

I’ve realized that I’ve neglected here for a long time.  A bit has been done in the time I’ve last updated.  I got a Xbox360 and I’ve been trying out a few new games.  I picked up Too Human and quite honestly haven’t liked it.  You die quite often and overall I’ve had a bad time with that game.  This week I picked up NHL ‘09, my first sports game in years, and it is amazing.  It’s really easy to pick up and play, and the Be A Pro mode where you play as a player trying to make it into the majors is quite deep.  It’s definitely worth checking out.
